Can dialog be recorded onto a minidisc recorder, then dumped down to a timecode dat recorder, or are the two not compatable for some reason? I ask beacuse minidisc recorder are relatively cheap, give great sound, and are really simply to use/portable. Thanx again!
The straight answer to your question is yes, you c
an shoot with a non timecode DAT and sync in post. You can have sound sync'd as your film is being telecined if you have SmartSync (a master clock that is contained in newer Aaton cameras), timecoded DAT or Timecoded Slates. If you don't have the cash to throw away on fancy gadgets, you can always slate the old fashioned way (but keep good records) and have sound sync'd at the lab on an audio workstation. It is still quite simple and quick if you have (reasonably) competent people on sound, slate and camera. Third option is to have your sound resolved onto a DAT at the correct speed and then digitize the sound and video seperately into the AVID. Syncing is easy and quick once again and you can dump your edited sound out of the AVID at the same quality it when in at (48 Khz sampling), so here is no need to match back later.
